The world marked the International Day of the Girl Child on October 11, 2026, with renewed calls to protect girls’ rights, end child marriage and expand opportunities for girls to learn, grow and shape their own futures.

This year’s theme, “End Child Marriage and Invest in Girls’ Rights,” highlights the need for stronger commitments to protecting girls from harmful practices and ensuring they have access to education, healthcare, safety and equal opportunities.

According to UNICEF, an estimated one in five girls worldwide is married before the age of 18. Child marriage can interrupt education, increase health risks and limit girls’ ability to make decisions about their lives and futures.

The annual observance, established by the United Nations General Assembly in 2011, draws attention to the challenges girls face while recognising their leadership, achievements and potential to contribute to their communities.

Despite progress in advancing girls’ rights, many continue to face barriers linked to poverty, discrimination, violence, conflict and limited access to education. These challenges require sustained action from governments, communities, families and organisations.

Ending child marriage requires enforcing laws that protect children, keeping girls in school, challenging harmful social norms and ensuring that girls have access to essential services and support. It also means listening to girls and including them in decisions that affect their lives.

The International Day of the Girl Child serves as a reminder that every girl deserves a safe childhood, quality education and the freedom to pursue her ambitions. Investing in girls’ rights is essential to building healthier communities and a more equitable future.
